A woman who was found fatally shot at a La Presa home Tuesday was killed by her estranged husband, who was later found dead in San Clemente, sheriff’s officials said.

Christopher Bird, 39, is accused of shooting Ashley Bird, 35, in the head at home on La Presa Avenue north of Jamacha Boulevard, sheriff’s Lt. Michael Krugh said. The two were separated at the time of the shooting, he said.

Officials said the shooting was reported as a break-in around 10:25 a.m. When deputies arrived at the home, they found Bird lying on a couch wounded. She died before she could be taken to a hospital.

Christopher Bird’s description was then sent out to multiple law enforcement agencies in and around San Diego County, Krugh said. Orange County sheriff’s deputies found the suspect dead later that day in his vehicle at Calafia Beach Park in San Clemente, Krugh said.

His cause of death will be determined by the Orange County Coroner’s Office.

Krugh said the case remains under investigation. No other details were immediately available.
