Not long after a hugely popular TikTok food influencer announced he was planning a visit to the Bay Area, warnings about the region’s “bipping” epidemic started pouring in.

This week, Keith Lee — a mixed martial arts fighter turned food reviewer — announced on social media that he would be touring the Bay Area to kick off 2024, and was looking for recommendations for local “mom-and-pop” spots to feature.

But shortly thereafter, the 27-year-old stated in a video, he faced a deluge of comments warning him about the Bay Area’s smash-and-grab problem, colloquially known as “bipping.”

Some of his followers even went as far as to discourage him from taking the trip, with comments like, “Please don’t come out here, they will rob you,” according to the video, which featured screenshots of messages and tweets directed at Lee. But Lee seemed determined not to let those fears impact his decision.

Lee, who grew popular on TikTok for reviewing restaurants while eating in his car, was recently included on Forbes’ North American 30 Under 30 list. The TikTok star did not immediately return a request for comment.

“I heard a lot of people call the Bay, ‘Gotham City,’ and the way my mind works, is that’s even more reason for me to come,” he said in the recent video.

He added that growing up, he learned the “toughest situations breed the toughest people” — and “the most talented people.” He wrote that he had a feeling the Bay Area had some talented people that he was “supposed” to meet.

But he ended his video with a dose of realism: He would not be leaving any possessions in his car, or any cash on his person.
